I was wondering what handwriting style is used in schools across the county? How much time is spent on handwriting in a typical day?

We use Peterson Handwriting. To be honest, I couldn't give you an accurate number of minutes that handwriting instruction occurs. I know that required writings for each grade level's end of the year student portfolios have the students in all grades doing quite a bit of formal writing though.

At Central Elementary School, we use the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting materials. Currently in Grades K-1-2, the teachers spend a maximum of 20 minutes on formal handwriting techniques. Since the "birth" of the PSSA, the students in Grades 3-4-5 do not participate in a "formal" handwriting program. They simply do not have enough time! Handwriting is incorporated into their formal writing projects - essays, personal narrative, etc.
Hope this helps!

It depends on the individual teacher. We do not have a required amount of instruction per week etc... 2nd grade addresses cursive the most diligently (typical of most districts I would guess). We purchase Peterson materials for 2nd grade. Other grade levels integrate it into the other subjects, usually spelling, if at all. I agree with Linda, once you address LA, math, science, social studies, and teaching writing skills, finding time for penmanship is difficult. I'd rather the teachers work on the core curriculum than writing neatly given the time constraints.
